Helsinki – World Design Capital in 2012

On November 25th 2009 Helsinki was named as World Design Capital for the year 2012 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid). The prize is awarded every second year to a city that promotes design as a tool to improve its social, cultural and economic life.

Helsinki used the slogan "Open Helsinki – Embedding Design in Life" in its application which illustrates well the versatility of design in different forms like in architecture, city planning, decoration and industrial design products.

During the year there will be a wide range of events and projects related to design in Helsinki metropolitan area that will gain broad international visibility.
